Former Head of State Dalia Grybauskaitė says she is not frightened by statements made by the President-elect of the United States of America (USA), Donald Trump, about the possibility of making Canada part of his country or of occupying Greenland and the Panama Canal. In her view, the actions of the future President are essential, not the words.

„No, it doesn't. I have worked with him, and you have to react calmly to statements – it is not what he says, but what he does that is important,“ Grybauskaitė told reporters at the Seimas on Monday when asked if she was worried about the statements made by the future President of the United States.
The two-term leader added that she expects Trump's term to be „a difficult period for everyone“.
„But this is not only because of him (Trump – ELTA), but the geopolitical situation in the world is generally very complicated. There will be more surprises, more uncertainty, and we will have to learn to live with that and adapt to it“, Grybauskaitė said.
Nausėda: such statements are not acceptable in the 21st century
At the same time, the current Head of State, Gitanas Nausėda, stressed that statements made by the future US President are unacceptable in the 21st century. The politician, serving his second term as President, said he expects Trump to give a more precise definition of the military relations between Europe and the US.
„So far, we are seeing statements that question the borders of individual states. That is not acceptable in the 12th century. As far as I remember, the 19th century was the last time territories were bought and sold,“ the President told reporters in the Seimas.
He said it was imperative to respect the sovereignty of states recognised in the international arena and uphold democratic values.
„Let's consider this a misunderstanding, but, of course, looking to the future, I very much hope that the NATO organisation will be strengthened, that the relationship between the European Union and our main transatlantic partner will be precisely defined,“ Nausėda stated.
After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his withdrawal on January 20, the European Commission said he would leave the EU. On January 20, Trump, who will take office as US President on January 20, announced that he could force Canada to become one of the states by using „economic force“. However, the outgoing Canadian Prime Minister said there was no chance of Canada becoming the 51st US state.
During the conference, Mr Trump did not rule out using military force to seize the Panama Canal and Greenland. His latest comments on the subject came during a private visit to Greenland early last week by his son, Donald Trump Jr. Later, the US President-elect also mentioned the possibility of naming the Gulf of Mexico after America.
