„This is an opportunity to take another look at ourselves, to see whether we are perfect enough, whether we are paying enough attention to ourselves – to our capabilities, both economic and military, and to the use of this potential in solving crises on the continent,“ Linkevičius told the Elta daily, adding that at the same time, Lithuania is facing particular challenges.
„There will be challenges. There have been all kinds of rhetoric, all kinds of statements. But we have to remind each other of our commitments. As far as the US is concerned, the NATO context comes first“, the diplomat said.
According to the former Minister, Lithuania will have to adapt again to a certain extent to the attitude of the new White House host.
„President Trump has repeatedly shown that he is a man with a business attitude; he likes deals and solutions. So, at this point, let's see what we can do together. Not everything will be easy“, Linkevičius said.
Commenting on Lithuania's relations with China, the diplomat stressed the need for continuity and caution. Experts say China could be one of the most important issues in US foreign policy after the presidential elections.
„We need to be cautious on issues that are high on the agenda of our strategic allies. Other factors will depend on them“, the diplomat said.
„I don't think there will be any sudden turns (in Lithuania – ELTA); there may be some nuances. But I hope that the general trend should remain“, Linkevičius concluded.
ELTA recalls that former US President Donald Trump, a Republican, has secured his victory in the presidential election and will return to the White House, according to the American media.
The AP news agency forecasts 277 electoral votes for the Republican candidate and 224 for his rival, Democrat Kamala Harris. A total of 270 electoral votes are needed to win the election.
