This was announced on Friday by LVŽS Chairman Ramūnas Karbauskis before the start of the Peasant Council meeting in Babtai.
„We have agreed to work for Lithuania together. Today, the Council of the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union has to approve the party's electoral list and single-seat candidates. And I am happy to say that Ignas Vėgėlė will be on the list,“ the leader of the Peasant Party, Ramūnas Karbauskis, told journalists.
„I have decided to be the last one, 141. The goal is straightforward – to show and tell everyone that it is not a mandate for a member of the Seimas that should be sought, not a place on the list. We need to seek consensus and an agreement to act together for Lithuania“, said Vėgėlė.
The lawyer stressed that his only ambition in running for the Seimas is to stop the state's current disgusting governance.
„We have agreed together on the most important thing – that this list will be a joint list, which will include representatives of other parties, leaders, non-politicians, medics, scientists, lawyers,“ Vėgėlė stressed.
If successful, he would apply for the post of Speaker of the Seimas
LVŽS had already announced that the leader of their list of candidates, Aurelijus Veryga, would become a contender for the leadership of the Government if successful. At the same time, the Chairman of the Peasant party announced that the Speaker of the Seimas position would be projected for Vėgėlė.
„We will approve Ignas Vėgėlė as a candidate for Speaker of the Seimas if we form a ruling majority and have this position,“ Karbauskis said.
He offered to lead the list to Ignas Vėgėlė
Karbauskis admitted that he had initially offered the lawyer to become the leader of the list of LVŽS candidates.
„My attempt to offer Ignas to lead the list failed. But we agreed together otherwise“, he said.
Vėgėlė assured that he had refused such an offer because he believed that a member of the political community should lead the party to the elections.
„The honourable Ramūnas Karbauskis offered to lead the list. But we agreed that the most correct way is for a party list to be led by a party member,“ the lawyer said.
The list will be supplemented by a group of public figures
Vėgėlė says that thanks to him, each of the five members of the joint list of the Peasants will include at least one person who has not been involved in politics before.
„The whole logic is that I am trying to expand the list with public figures, lawyers, scientists, medics, professionals. (...) This is not a small group of people – at least in each top five of the lists, there will be at least one of them, except the first five, where there will be politicians of the LVŽS, and that is reasonable,“ Vėgėlė said on Friday.
For his part, Karbauskis assured us that the list would be one of the strongest.
„Those public figures who will be on our list will be in the places that I have proposed,“ the Peasant Party leader emphasised.
„The list will certainly be one of the strongest. (...) We are aware of our responsibility because what has been done these four years has been a disappointing policy,“ he said.
The LVŽS Council, which will meet on Friday, will approve the final lists of candidates for the Seimas.
As previously reported, Karbauskis said he had proposed to Vėgėlė to run for the Seimas together in mid-June. However, after several weeks of talks, the Peasants decided that their party's list would be led by MEP Aurelijus Veryga, a party member, in the Seimas elections.
For his part, Vėgėlė has repeatedly stated that he could see the possibility of forming a coalition list of parties.
The Seimas elections will take place on 13 October this year.
